Ducks and Coats

Ducks search for a
feast behind Paul's Market.

These ducks are used to
people, and "You can tell
who they know and who they don't," said Randy Rees, who has been looking after these ducks with his daughter, Rulona for the past two years.

Don't worry about the one hundred or so ducks behind Paul's Market on 12th Avenue in Nampa - they are in good hands! In 2008, Kaylyn Coats, who lives across the street from the grocery store, kept in her home over 27 ducks for six months. It all started when the Coats were taking down a couple of trees in their backyard. "One of the nests was going to be squashed by a tree we were pulling down, so I incubated them," Kaylyn said. Her father-in-law, Mike Coats, said, "Every time she found an abandoned nest, she'd take them in."

  1. interesting story! good job finding something out of the ordinary.

the first two are my favorite because they are especially abnormal. i love the angle of the first one.

also, great job showing the whole story--the ducks and the Coats family.

  2. I like the story and how you incorporate the people involved. Plus ducks are just so bloody cute =) The last one should be cropped I agree, but you do well to capture the story. I love the second and third one the best because you capture them in their environment as well as out of the ordinary.

  3. I always have felt sorry for those ducks, because they live in such a trashy place. I have also always felt sorry for the people who have all the ducks in their yard. cause there is so much poop.

  4. oh ian's comment......funny.........anyways...

...great job finding a story that most people dont know about. I would have never guessed that there were a hundred ducks behind the grocery store. Though I wish that there was at least one photo that showed the mass of ducks.

  5. Good job finding such an interesting story. I really like the first picture because of how it is such a large space that is filled with the ducks. I also like the last picture of the single duck. This is a really good human interest story.
